چکیده

Based on the duality that the asymptotic properties of statistical inference in the limit of an in nite number of observations hold for geometric tting in the limit of in nitesimal perturbations, we de ne the geometric MDL as the dual to Rissanen's MDL and give an information-theoretic interpretation. Doing numerical simulations and real image virtual studio experiments, we observe that the geometric AIC and the geometric MDL have di erent characteristics.

Geometric BIC

The author introduced the “geometric AIC” and the “geometric MDL” as model selection criteria for geometric fitting problems. These correspond to Akaike’s “AIC” and Rissanen’s “BIC”, respectively, well known in the statistical estimation framework. Another criterion well known is Schwarz’ “BIC”, but its counterpart for geometric fitting has been unknown. This paper introduces the corresponding ...

Model Selection for Geometric Inference

Contrasting “geometric fitting”, for which the noise level is taken as the asymptotic variable, with “statistical inference”, for which the number of observations is taken as the asymptotic variable, we give a new definition of the “geometric AIC” and the “geometric MDL” as the counterparts of Akaike’s AIC and Rissanen’s MDL. We discuss various theoretical and practical problems that emerge fro...

A goal geometric programming problem (G2P2) with logarithmic deviational variables and its applications on two industrial problems

A very useful multi-objective technique is goal programming. There are many methodologies of goal programming such as weighted goal programming, min-max goal programming, and lexicographic goal programming. In this paper, weighted goal programming is reformulated as goal programming with logarithmic deviation variables. Here, a comparison of the proposed method and goal programming with weighte...

A Note on the Applied Use of MDL Approximations

An applied problem is discussed in which two nested psychological mod-els of retention are compared using minimum description length (MDL).The standard Fisher information approximation to the normalized maximum likelihood is calculated for these two models, with the result that the full model is assigned a smaller complexity, even for moderately large samples. A geometric interpretation for thi...

For geometric inference from images, what kind of statistical model is necessary?

In order to facilitate smooth communications with researchers in other fields including statistics, this paper investigates the meaning of “statistical methods” for geometric inference based on image feature points. We point out that statistical analysis does not make sense unless the underlying “statistical ensemble” is clearly defined. We trace back the origin of feature uncertainty to image ...
